WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR AN EDITORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION? EDITORIAL SHOOT FOR TROY INVESTMENT

Time:

It may sound obvious, but you do need to block out some time. Of course a professional photographer can be reactive and quick, can think on their feet and get a pretty great result from simply taking candid shots while their subjects are at work and going about their daily business. And at times clients are really too busy to offer any more time than that. Or maybe only have ten, fifteen minutes.

But in an ideal world, you will put aside an hour or two, so that your key people can be put at their ease, and the best can be got from them.

Location: Is your office the ideal space? Perhaps your office isn’t even in the country where the shoot is happening and we need to rent you a space. Unlikely anyone will let you use their space for free as a backdrop. But if your office is the ideal - or the only - option, then please consider the best-looking and biggest space you have. There is no such thing as too big. But there is such a thing as too small.

Style: How do you want this to look? Are you going for something very stylised and moody, something stark and high key, or , more likely, you’re after something more natural, as we created here.

Great editorial photography is something quite apart from headshots. It’s knowing how to make people look good and look natural, whilst giving them the gloss and environment of a magazine supplement. It can be a very simple process of capturing people in action, or as in the case of this shoot for Group of Peers for Troy Investment, it required subtle and complex, though seemingly simple lighting.

Sometimes editorial requires very involved stylised lighting, whereas here, the trick was to keep that lighting so discrete you barely know it’s there at all.

So what’s needed? Just book a photographer, right?

Well, yes and no.

Hair and Make up:

Not everyone will want to do this, but it is a big plus to have a hair and make up artist on standby, to touch up blemishes, shine, spots, wrinkles, stray hair. You’re paying to look your best, and a MUA fee is a small part of that price, so it can be a really good investment.
